When you have a severe allergy or mild aversion to gluten, it can make it challenging to dine out. And while more establishments are catering to gluten-free diets, selections are limited and lacking in taste.
But at Jane’s Cafe, we offer gluten-free food that is deliciously tasty. For example, our Beyond Beef dishes are gluten-free food, and very flavorful. So, you don’t have to settle for tasteless and limited gluten-free food options.
What Is Gluten?
In general, gluten is a name for the proteins found in barley, wheat and rye. It can also be found in many types of foods, even ones that would not be expected. Gluten’s purpose is to help foods maintain their shape.
In people with celiac disease, gluten triggers an immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine. This can disrupt the absorption of nutrients from food and cause a host of symptoms. Plus, it can lead to other problems like seizures, nerve damage, infertility, and osteoporosis.
Why All The Fuss About Gluten-Free Food?
For those with celiac disease or similar medical conditions, maintaining a gluten-free diet is essential. However, a gluten-free diet is also popular among people who haven’t been diagnosed with a gluten related medical condition.
A gluten-free diet can be a healthy way to eat depending on which foods you choose. And also how often you eat these foods and whether your other food choices are healthy ones. Examples of other food choices would be lean meats, low-fat dairy, vegetables, fruit, whole gluten-free grains. And of course, healthy fats.
But don’t replace gluten-containing foods with more starchy vegetables, sweets, and red meats. Unfortunately, doing that can lead to a higher intake of saturated fat and unwanted calories. And no one wants to tack on extra calories.
Additionally, watch your intake of commercially prepared gluten-free snacks. Albeit, they can be tasty, they’re also high in refined sugar, carbs, fat, and salt. Therefore, it would be almost the same as eating gluten-containing snacks.
In addition to healthy menu items at Jane’s Cafe, you can also find gluten-free foods at your local supermarket. In the past, such food items were mostly only available at health food stores.
Going Completely Gluten Free
Unless you have a medical condition that dictates no gluten, completely avoiding gluten is not advisable. We’re not trying to give a mixed message here. We want you to eat healthy and understand your food choices.
Having said that, cutting out gluten altogether can set you up for some nutritional deficiencies. In the United States, fortified cereals and breads are a major source of B vitamins. And avoiding foods containing essentials vitamins your body needs will cause problems for anyone. But it’s especially problematic for pregnant women or women who may become pregnant.
Bottom line, Jane’s Cafe is committed to providing diners of all dietary needs with the delicious and healthy food they deserve.
