While many of us strive to eat better, it’s not always possible when we’re on-the-go. In addition to healthy foods at Jane’s Cafe, you’re already going for healthy options cooking food from scratch at home.
The Jane’s Cafe chefs know we have a responsibility as we feed more homes throughout San Diego County. And that is to empower you to make healthy choices. But healthy shouldn’t be boring. Instead, it should be balanced, varied and most importantly delicious.
Healthy Foods at Jane’s Cafe
We’re always hard at work in the Jane’s Cafe kitchen, cooking up more meals for you to choose from every week. And this year we’ve been making huge strides with our overall healthiness.
Here are a few of the changes we’ve been working on so far in 2021.
More Of Your 5-A-Day
You’ve been asking us for more veggies, so we make it happen. Now all of our recipes have at least one of your 5-a-day. And more than half of our recipes serve up 2 or more of your 5-a-day.
But that’s not all. We’ve also been adding more ‘visible veggies’. Visible veggie portions, unlike 5-a-day, only counts vegetables you can see. For instance, greens, peppers, and salad – instead of less obvious veggies such as tomatoes and onions. We’ve made veggie portions bigger, added vegetable sides, more salads, and even taken some recipes back to the drawing board.
Obviously, it’s been a lot behind-the-scenes work, coming to your breakfast and lunch selections soon!
Low Calorie Foods
Have you spotted our new calorie control options? After so many of you spoke to us asking for lower calorie options, we created this range specifically for you. So now, you’re have more healthy foods options at Jane’s Cafe.
We also started calling up lighter recipes. And some have lighter twists on classic recipes such as our plant-based chicken stir fry. This dish in addition to others are about 30% lower in calories and/or fat than the original recipes.
Improved Healthy Food Choices
We’ve leveled up the healthy food choices section of our Healthy Alternatives menu. Consequently, all recipes are more nutritious and balance with at least 2 of your 5-a-day. Additionally, anything you find here will have less than 850 calories.
Spotlight on Salt
Earlier this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) review current salt targets from different countries. In addition to establishing global benchmarks for sodium levels in foods, it also wants reduce overall salt intake. WHO’s goal is to reduce the average salt intake across the population by 30%, to <5g salt/<2g sodium per day. In particular, this could lead to reduced blood pressure and subsequently a reduced risk of heart disease. At Jane's Cafe, we're always looking for ingredients that are better for you in every way. But not flavorless replacements, ones that are healthier and tastier. We recently struck gold with stock powders which have a better flavor and half as much salt as our old stock cubes.
